Juventus sells $60m worth of Ronaldo jerseys in 24 hours

Questions were asked – eyebrows were raised when Serie A winners Juventus splashed out £99.2m on 33-year-old Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo, but it looks like the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's marketability is already paying dividends.

A lot of people argued whether it was wise spending such an extraordinary amount of money on a player who will turn 34 in February.

But according to The Guardian, within a day of breaking the news, Juventus sold 520,000 shirts bearing Ronaldo’s name.

Depending on which shirt the fans bought—there are ones for fans and an ‘authentic’ one that is the same one the players wear—from that day’s sales alone, Juventus could have earned anywhere between €54.6 million (£48.8m) and €71.4 million (£63.8m).

That would already cover half of Ronaldo’s transfer fee, and although Juventus would only see £4.5-7 million due to the fact that the shirt’s manufacturer, Adidas gets the bulk of the profits.
