‎Andy Uba's Political Calculations; between political survival & a duty to serve Ndi Anambra

As written by Ichie Ezeani

Anambra South Senatorial Zone is politically divided into 2 quarters - Nnewi Quarters (comprising Nnewi North & South, Ihiala and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas) and the Old Aguata Union (comprising Orumba North & South and Aguata Local Government Areas).

Between 1999 - 2003, Sen. Nnamdi Eriobuna from Ekwusigo occupied the Senate slot for the Zone‎. From 2003 - 2007, ‎Sen. Ugochukwu Uba from Aguata held the slot. ‎After 2007‎, Sen. Ikechukwu Obiora from Nnewi occupied the position till 2011.

‎In 2011, a power shift happened and Sen. Andy Uba held the slot for the Old Aguata Union. By 2019, he may have done a cumulative of 8 years.

Going by this arrangement, the next senator for Anambra South Zone should emerge from either Nnewi South or Ihiala LGA's for the Nnewi Zone since Nnewi North and Ekwusigo have had a shot each.

After this, the tide will swing back to the Old Aguata Union to be decided in favor of only Orumba North or South LGA since Aguata LGA has occupied the slot for at least 10 years notwithstanding the truth that Aguata LGA  allowed a single family to apportion to it self their collective patrimony.

From the analogy above, it's not hard to understand that Sen. Andy Uba ‎must compulsorily exit the Senate by 2019 so Nnewi Zone (that isn't smiling) may take another shot after which even when power returns to the OAU, Aguata LGA cannot take a shot on the basis of equity.

For those who don't understand, Sen. Andy Uba is currently fighting His last political battle and it is actually a do or die affair and maybe a fight to finish.‎

For a senator who's wealth are mainly in the hands of third parties, the easiest way to reclaim them is by holding an executive post in government.

For a senator who stands the risk of (sudden) retirement, the coming governorship election is a must win by what ever method.

For a senator who is on the verge of graduation to the rank of former leaders, all hands must be on deck to ensure a win come November 2017.

To Andy Uba, the coming elections is more of a fight for political survival and relevance than a desire to improve Anambra State.‎
