Biafra, Bruce Mayrock, Nigeria And The Rest Of Us: 50years after, the wound festers

'If we put half the energy we put in making some rich and relevant in the name of Biafra into the fight for justice, fairness and equity in Nigeria, so much more will be achieved." - Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr.

I shall be taking a more proactive step beyond writing and speaking on the need for restructuring as I accept the invitation to do a citation on Bruce Mayrock later today.

Bruce Mayrock: The Martyr And Hero.

Bruce Mayrock was the 20year old Hebrew student of Columbia University, New York, who set himself on fire in front of the UN Building on the 30th of May 1969 to protest the Biafra genocide.

Bruce set himself on fire because a complicit universe refused to look the way of millions of Biafrans who were being killed in a genocidal war. Bruce eluded the 2Guards who chased after him with fire extinguishers as horrified delegates and onlookers watched in wonderment.

After a long chase, Bruce fell to his knees having been badly burnt as the guards put out the fire a little too late. He died 9hours later at Belleone Hospital shortly after midnight of May 30th, 1969.

Reports say that Bruce Mayrock gave his life in protest after the letters he had written to the President and leading Govt figures regarding the Biafra genocide were left unattended. His placard read "Peace is where there is an absence of fear of any kind. You must stop the genocide,  Please save nine million Biafrans".

With this sacrifice BRUCE MAYROCK became immortal as a question-mark on the human soul, as a hero and as a Martyr. Bruce gave his life for a people he never met. May God continue to rest his soul, as Biafra which epitomizes the call for justice, equity and fairness remain Bruce's esteemed heritage.

On behalf of all men of goodwill, we thank you Bruce, and may your rest with the saints triumphant remain profound.

Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr
