“To the glory of God, yesterday being February 12, 2020, I was appointed as a member of the 56 man Senate Constitution Review Committee by the Senate President, His Excellency; Senator (Dr) Ahmad Lawan.

“The committee which has all principal officers as members; one Senator from each State of the Federation, and two Senators selected to represent each geo-political zone in the country is saddled with the task of reviewing and making further amendments to the 1999 Constitution to address contemporary issues which will greatly impact on our democracy.

“The Constitution amendment process is a fundamental issue of national importance which is extremely critical to the enhancement of national development. It is deeply humbling to have the privilege to be here as the only YPP Senator, among so many distinguished Senators. I look forward to caucusing, reflecting, meeting with fellow colleagues to dissect the reports of the various public hearings and other channels of inputs by Nigerians to articulate a bill to address issues that appear to have achieved public consensus in this review process.

“Given the caliber of the composition of this  committee, I am assured that we will steer an inclusive, robust and participatory exercise that would allow recommendations which would enable the committee come up with a constitution that would positively impact and consolidate Nigeria’s democratic gains.

“I cannot conclude without commending and expressing my gratitude to the Senate President; His Excellency, Dr. Ahmad Lawan for finding me worthy for this patriotic task; Your sweltering devotion to bequeath to our nation a National Assembly that works for all will be remembered by generations to come.

Conclusively, I wish to reiterate that my priority will always be to work for the betterment of public interest through robust, effective and detailed legislation to ensure that my people derive the dividends of democracy.

“I hereby call on my respected constituents to come forward with any ideas that will add value to our constituency in this very important constitution review deliberations.

“May God in his infinite mercy crown our efforts with resounding success as we embark on this patriotic journey of Nation building.

“The Senate also held a valedictory session in honour of late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu whom we lost on December 18, 2019. We indeed lost a rare gem whose sojourn as a lawmaker was eventful, productive and impact filled.

“I pray to God to repose his soul in eternal bliss and grant his family the fortitude to carry on peacefully in his absence.”

Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ubah.
Anambra South Senatorial District.
