BREAKING: Buhari swears in new Chief Justice of Nigeria Tanko Mohammed

President Muhammadu Buhari has just sworn in a new Chief Justice of Nigeria after suspending current CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

It is not clear if the president has such powers to suspend the CJN.

Mr Buhari said he removed Mr Onnoghen based on an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal dated January 23, 2019.

The new CJN Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed from Bauchi State was sworn in by Mr Buhari Friday afternoon inside the council chamber of State House Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The swearing was done after the president signed the new Executive Order 007.

The government is accusing Mr Onnoghen of false asset declaration and has filed charges against him at the CCT.

On Thursday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja stopped the tribunal from proceeding with Mr Onnoghen’s trial pending the determination of the main case before it.
