As Nigeria commemorates her 58th Independence Anniversary, today (October 1, 2018), frontline Anambra South Senatorial hopeful and Chairman, Capital Oil and Gas, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, has stated that even at 58, Nigeria can still attain greatness.
Ubah, in his Independence Day message, affirmed that Nations are built by men and women who have the will and vision to accomplish greatness, not for themselves, their immediate families and friends, but for their country.
The Founder, Afa Igbo Efuna, a grassroots political movement in Nigeria, stated that, Nigeria's journey to the greatness her citizens earnestly desire and pray for, starts with "our ability to identify and instate credible and trustworthy leaders who are devoid of nepotic tendencies and possess the will to build a better Nigeria through the creation and sustenance of strong and dependable political and economic institutions."
The statement read: "Every October 1st, We, Nigerians celebrate Independence Day with great fervour while reflecting on the labour of our heroes past who, despite their differences, religious divides and diverse cultural backgrounds, came together for the common good of a great nation.
"It is a day of celebration, joy and happiness as we memorialize our emancipation from the shackles of colonialism; a day of sober reflection in a bid to comprehensively assess the past and present as well as pray for a better and greater tomorrow.
"Ultimately, October 1st presents us with an opportunity to collectively renew our pledge of faithfulness, loyalty and honesty while defending Nigeria's unity and soverignty.
"Amidst all the fanfare and celebration, it is exigent that we take a retrospecitve insight into our journey thus far as well as take stock of ourselves as Nigerians and where we stand as a Nation today."
Irked by the stunted growth of the country, the Publisher, Authority Newspapers, pointed that, "The issues confronting economic growth in present day Nigeria are glaring. I sincerely believe that a Nation can only be considered developed when it possesses all the indices, instruments and frameworks that suggest a decent and quality standard of living of the citizenry; in which case, they are not threatened by poverty, insecurity and other features associated with underdevelopment such as illiteracy and poor access to basic amenities and health facilities, corruption and political instability.
"Economic development in every society must be measured by the opportunities and capabilities that the people enjoy, rather than material output indices like Gross National Income(GNI). A society cannot be regarded as developed without a corresponding improvement in the quality of life of its citizens.
"Despite our limitless potentials and opportunities, our major impediment in Nigeria is that we are largely constrained by political desperation and corruption. Our diversity in culture, ethnicity and religion which should be the major source of our strength and geared towards the creation of opportunities for growth and development is now mostly used as an instrument of destabilisation and disunity."
According to the Proprietor, Authority FM, "Nigerians must be united not only by a common purpose, but also by common values; love, honour, morality, progress, courage and patriotism. Our diversity should be harnessed and forged into a potent weapon for the realization of our national interests not a platform identified as a viable tool for tearing ourselves asunder.
"Conclusively, I would like to reiterate that Nations are built by men and women who have the will and vision to accomplish greatness, not for themselves, their immediate families and friends, but for their country.
"It is my staunch belief that our journey to the greatness we earnestly desire and pray for starts with our ability to identify and instate credible and trustworthy leaders who are devoid of nepotic tendencies and possess the will to build a better Nigeria through the creation and sustenance of strong and dependable political and economic institutions. So help us God! God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Happy 58th Independence day, Nigeria!"
