The stakeholders called on the National Assembly to ensure the prompt passage of the Right to Food Bill which is currently before the joint committee on the amendment of the 1999 constitution.
The call was made in Benin City, Edo State and Awka, the Anambra state capital when a Non governmental organization, the Farm and Infrastructure Foundation (FIF) led a national campaign on right to food group on an advocacy call to some stakeholders in the South South and South East zones
The leader of the team, Prof. Gbolagade Ayoola said the quick passage of the Right to Food Bill by the National Assembly, would give impetus to the means of food production, preservation and distribution of food across the country.
Prof. Ayoola who is also the Chairman of Voices for Food Security (VFS) in Nigeria expressed that, the contemporary notion of food as a human right contrasts from the traditional notion of food as a human need,as currently the case, as provided for in Chapter 2 of the Nigerian Constitution.
The Campaign was taken to the Edo State House of Assembly, The Palace of Oba of Benin, Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and to the Headquarters of Edo State Broadcasting Service (EBS).
Responding during a courtesy call, The Oba of Benin who spoke through the Face of Oba Ewuare II Foundation, Miss Ifueko Aideyan, expressed the readiness of the Monarch to add to the number of FIF's partners in demanding for the passage of the Right to Food Bill , currently before the National Assembly in Abuja. She finally apended her signature to the campaign petition.
Contributing, the Immediate past Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly endorsed the campaign and promised to relate the campaign message to the National Chairman of His Party, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole towards mobilizing APC Federal Law markers from the South South Geopolitical Zone in support of the Bill.
Also, on 24th August 2018, members of the national campaign on right to food staged a peaceful rally in Awka, the Anambra state capital to sensitize the people on the need for the national assembly to pass the right to food bill currently before it.
The group Marched from the Anambra broadcasting service premises down to Aroma to the Anambra state house of Assembly complex in Awka, where the clerk of the house addressed them.
The rally was part of the activities to create awareness about it's existence in the south eastern part of the country.
Those visited by the National Campaign team on Right to Food included: the Oba of Benin, the Edo State House of Assembly, Benin City, The General of Edo State Broadcasting Service in Benin City, the Igwe of Awka, the Honourable Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly cum Chairman, South East Conference of Speakers, Chairman of Anambra State Conference of INEC Registered Political Parties, the Chairman of Board of Trustees cum Director, Center for Sustainable Development at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Managing Director of Anambra State Broadcasting Service in Awka and the Anglican Archbishop of Enugu, His Grace, Most Rev . Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma.
