NGO petitions Human Rights Commission over corps member shot dead by the Police

The late corps member, Linda Nkechi Igwetu
The Gavel, a non-governmental organisation, has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the police officers who allegedly killed Linda Nkechi Igwetu, a corps member serving in Abuja.

The deceased was allegedly shot by police officers at a checkpoint in Cedi plaza, Central Business District, Abuja while on her way from a party in preparation for her passing out parade. She was a native of Ukpor, Nnewi South LGA, Anambra State.
The officers were identified as Benajamen Peters and Nichola Obioha.

The petition read in part, “It is trite principle of the law that no individual or institution shall engage in the extra-judicial killing of another. Section 33 (1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) provides that ‘every person has a right to life, and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life, save in execution of the sentence of a court in respect of a criminal offense of which he has been found guilty in Nigeria.

“The victim was a NYSC member who obeyed the obligation to serve her fatherland and who has the commitment, from the federal government, to ensure her safety and protection.”
