76 senators sponsor bill on state police

A bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide for state police was introduced for first reading on the floor of the Senate yesterday.

A total of 76 senators led by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu sponsored the bill.

It was titled ‘Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (alteration) Bill, 2018 (SB. 694).’

Ekweremadu had on Tuesday announced that the bill would come up yesterday as part of a fresh amendment to the 1999 Constitution with a view to establishing state police.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives had last week agreed to revisit the issue of state police following the spate killings in the country.

Already, the bill was introduced in the House sponsored by House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila.
