Ukpor Celebrates Chief Mbazulike Amechi at 89

The Ukpor Improvement Union will on Saturday, June 16, 2018, unveil a  statue of Chief Mbazulike Amechi  (Dara Akunwafo) sited at Afor Ukpor as part of the activities to  celebrate his 89th birthday celebration.

In a press release signed Thursday by the Union's Director of Publicity, Mazi Chidi Orjika, the modelling of the magnificent statue of Chief Mbazulike Amechi which will be unveiled by the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo signifies the  tradition of Ndi Ukpor to honor its sons/daughters whose impeccable record and immense contribution to local and national development has brought credit and honour to community.

Chief Mbazulike Amechi, a nationalist and a former Aviation minister in the First Republic, was born on June, 16 1929.

Chief Amechi who is the only surviving Zikist as at today, belongs to the fast depleting  tribe of elder nationalists who, as recalled, put his own life in line in  defense of  Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe in the 60's, a courageous act that earned him the sobriquet THE BOY IS GOOD by the grateful Azikiwe

According to the Director of Publicity, the 6 feet statue  which is a small token of the Union's  formal recognition of his enduring legacies as Ukpor formost brand also  captures the genuine feelings of Ndi Ukpor as it confirms their appreciation of having a son who is today best acknowledged  as "a great privilege to the nation"

The 89th birthday celebration of Dara Akunwafo will begin with a Holy mass celebration at St Mary's Catholic Church, Ukpor by 10:30 am.

Afterwards, there will be a  stop over at Ukpor Town hall  for a brief program which will  feature among other things, the President-General's address, citation and cutting of cake to be chaired by His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR after which he will lead  other guests to the statues site for its unveiling.
