Northern youths urge Buhari to fulfil campaign promises or forget second term

Youths from the 19 northern states of the country under the aegis of Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) yesterday told President Muhammadu Buhari to fulfill his election campaign promises or forget about his second term bid.

The group said the call had become imperative because a lot of Nigerians had lost confidence in democracy due to the use of government apparatuses in harassing perceived enemies and the level of sufferings in the country.

The group in a statement b said “Nigerians are daily faced with the threat of kidnapping, banditry and killings in many parts of the country, without the government coming to their rescue.”

The statement signed by NYCN President, Isah Abubakar and made available to newsmen in Kaduna added that provision of security of lives and property was now a mirage contrary to the campaign promises of the president.

It reads: “We call on the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, as a matter of integrity, to deliver the promises he made to Nigerians before the expiration of his first term to qualify him for a second term.

“If not, northern youths would have no option but scout for a more promising young person to take over the leadership of the country come 2019.

“People now sleep in fear. Killings across Nigeria had become a norm, hunger and bad health facilities. This and many more are a threat to democracy in Nigeria and anywhere in the world.”

Abubakar further added; “Among these challenges, however, there is a great fear for our democracy in 2019, judging from the internal crisis that is rocking the ruling party’s convention across the nation.

“NYCN is sensitising youths, women and children through requisite leadership qualities that will overturn the status quo in order to build a Nigeria of our dream, if the current leadership fail to do that.

“The northern youth council is poised to supporting and empowering the right leadership framework and application of our rules of engagements, with women and youths as drivers, especially in leadership at all levels of government. We are determined to join hands with well-meaning Nigerians to in 2019, rid Nigeria of the corrupt elements in government.”
