Ronaldo Scores, Sent Off As Madrid Defeat Barca In Spanish Super Cup 1st Leg

Real Madrid's talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a cracker and was sent off in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup at the Camp Nou on Sunday night against Barcelona which the European champions won 3-1.

Gerrard Pique conceded an own goal against Barcelona while Lionel Messi converted a controversial penalty in the La Liga curtain raiser. Ronaldo and Marco Asensio then scored for Madrid with spectacular strikes in the second half to take the advantage into the second leg.

Luiz Suarez was presented with the first chance of the game but his left-footed shot at the edge of Real Madrid's box was too tame to cause any harm.

Barcelona had a shout for handball overlooked by the referee while a flashpoint ensued in the 20th minute as Barca players swarmed round Casemiro for a foul on Messi- the Brazilian was shown the yellow card.

Messi went close to scoring in the 25th minute but the ball nestled on top of the net.

Pique inadvertently scored an own goal in the 50th minute in his desperation to clear a Marcelo cross into the Barca six-yard box.

Carvajal almost made it 2-0 to Madrid but his close range from a Karim Benzema cross was blocked Jordi Alba.

Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted on to take the place of Benzema in the 58th minute. The Portuguese went for a spectacular overhead kick twenty minutes before the end of the match but it was off target.

Ronaldo's 'goal' a minute later was however ruled out for offside.

Sergio Busquets skewed his shot wide in front of the Madrid goal after Denis Suarez's initial intention was thwarted by a block.

Keylor Navas was deemed to have brought down Luiz Suarez down in the box after Messi's shot deflected to the path of the Uruguayan. Television replays showed the touch was minimal. Messi scored from the spot. with sixteen minutes left to play.

Ronaldo scored a beauty of a goal in the 80th minute with a powerful shot into the top right corner after dribbling past Pique who was having a poor game.

Ronaldo was booked for taking his shirt off but the Portuguese got into more trouble soon afterwards for simulation after  going down under a Samuel Umtiti challenge. He could face further sanction for shoving the referee from behind.

Marco Asensio scored Madrid's third with a left footed shot which sailed into the top of the net when he was released by  Lucas Vazzquez pass in the 90th minute
