About 200 shops and more than 2,000 stalls, along with goods worth millions of naira, were gutted by fire on Sunday at the popular Masaka Market in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The fire was said to have started around 1:30am.

The Chairman, Karu Traders Association, Chief Sunday Danladi, said the inferno affected shops selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables.

He said, “Over 200 locked-up shops and 2,005 stalls selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables were completely razed down by the inferno.”

Danladi called on the state government to provide a standby fire engine in the market to avert future recurrence.
