Senator Shehu Sani walks out of EFCC event over El-Rufai’s attendance, says he's under investigation

Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District on Thursday, July 6th, walked out of  the launching of Kaduna zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to protest the attendance of Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

The anti-graft agency had invited the two politicians, among other dignitaries, to the launch of the new office at Wurno Road, Kaduna. But Senator Sani drove out of the venue to protest the invitation of Governor El-Rufai, his arch-rival.

Efforts by people at the gate to convince him to return to the event were unsuccessful.

Explaining why he stormed out of the event, Senator Sani, who is chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic Debts, said:  “I was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to attend the opening of its office and stakeholders conference and what surprised me was to see the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, lined up to be the special guest of honour.

This is the same EFCC that is investigating the mismanagement of London-Paris Club loan refund.

“How can we have a situation of such? There is a petition written by some people of the state against the governor on the Paris Club loan. How can I sit with such a person?  I believe that inviting him as the special guest of honour will affect the investigative capacity of the agency. That is my reason for walking out of the event..”
