Understanding The Motives Behind DSS Skewed Cadets Recruitment, By Anayo Nwosu

Many Nigerians may not understand the import of the recent employment of  51 DSS cadets from Katsina State alone which was more than 44 cadets from all the South-east states combined.

Further breakdown of the newly commissioned cadet officers on geopolitical basis revealed that 165 are from the North-west, about four times as many as 42 cadets who were picked from the South south.

The figures for the other zones are North-east 100, North-central 66, South-west 57 and South-east 44.

ANALYSIS

It is natural that all the DSS officers in employment before the recent employment exercise must have retired 35 years from December 2016. This is because, a federal employee retires at the age of 60 years or upon reaching 35 years of service, whichever is earlier.

Assuming that all the new cadets are of the same age and are not prematurely retired, or it then means that 25 years or 30 years from now, the majority of the decision making officers in the DSS would be from the North.

Even when a southerner happens to head the service, then Gen Aguiyi-Ironsi experience  may be repeated. A commander relies on reports from his lieutenants.

Also, in a situation where about 10% the of senior officers cadre of same rank is from the same state which in this case is Katsina is dangerous.

The pepertrators of this act have by so doing, placed their state of origin  and their region in a pepertual domination of the nation's secret police.

This is a far-sighted wrongful appropriation of a national institution and an attempt to dominate the country's elite security apparatus now and in future.

This behemoth must be dismantled otherwise no future president from 20-30 year's time  other than a president from the area favoured in this recruitment shall feel safe in this arrangement.

This is because those who should protect the president and handle our nation's secret security services were recruited with any other motive other than national or patriotic objective.
