Traffic Rules For Children: 6 things parents need to know

Parents are to ensure that their children imbibe the following habits below when crossing the road and traveling by car.

  1. Always make it a rule without any exceptions that seat belts are fastened before the car moves.
  2. Parents should insist that their children embark and disembark from a vehicle using the kerb-side door at early age.
  3.  It is essential that children learn to cross roads safely and use pedestrian crossings where they are available.
  4.  When on the street, children that are up to the age of 10 should be with an adult as they have not yet developed the physical or perceptual skills to keep safe when dealing with traffic.
  5. Subsequently, when walking on the street or crossing roads, parents should always hold hands with younger children.  Walking with the child and talking about what is happening and what could have happened helps children recognise potential dangers when they are old enough and ready to be on their own.
  6. Explore the local area with your child to find the safest routes to schools or recreational centres and explain why these routes are the safest.
