N9m Poster Levy: Ezeemo Drags Obiano To Court

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Progressive Peoples Alliance in Anambra State,  Godwin Ezeemo, has sued  Governor Willie Obiano and the state government over a N9m levied on each aspirant in the state for the display of their campaign posters.

Ezeemo disclosed this on Saturday in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The governorship aspirant said he took the action because the government’s decision was unconstitutional.

He said, “We are in court, so I don’t want to dwell much on that. But one fact is clear, Obiano cannot intimidate me.

“A leader must see himself as a servant of the people that voted him to power. He should serve the people well by making them happy to gain their confidence and trust. No amount of threat and intimidation can stop me because it must happen by God’s will.”

The Managing Director of Anambra State Signage and Advertisement Agency, Jude Emecheta, had announced that candidates vying for the governorship position in the state would pay N9m each before they could be permitted to paste their posters and notices in any part of the state.

He warned that any aspirant who violated the rule would be sued accordingly, adding that the law did not permit indiscriminate pasting of posters.

He said the money realised from the levies would be used to clean up the mess generated by such posters after the elections.
