An Inaugural Speech by the Transition Committee Chairman, Engr. Felix Odimegwu, on the Occasion of the Official Hand-over/Assumption of Duty at the Local Government Headquarters, Ukpor. Held this day April 3, 2017.
Protocols
It is with deep sense of responsibility that I stand before you today as the TC chairman of our great LGA. In line with the Governor Willie Obiano's desire to see government brought closer to the people, the caretaker committee chairmen were meticulously selected and inaugurated few days back. This desire of the Governor has been the driving principle and main recipe for real development. I have always advocated that governance should be brought closer to the people as it would engender affective development better and faster.
I want to assure us that my administration as the TC chairman will be anchored on "all inclusiveness". In this regard, the ten towns that make up this L.G.A shall be fairly represented in the council. Specifically, we shall focus on qualitative and compulsory primary education for every child across the towns that make up our LGA. Personally, I shall ensure the various government owned primary schools in the L.G.A that have fallen into disrepair are renovated and made conducive for our children to learn. This is a project I hold so dear. Education remains the most important key to development hence the need to pay significant attention to it.
We shall work towards collaborating with both the State and Federal government including international agencies towards ensuring that books are made available to every primary school in our L.G.A. including internet facilities.
We shall also focus on primary health care delivery. The primary health care centres in the LGA shall receive immediate attention. My assessment of the health centres is that there is lack of adequate staff and constant drug supply. This shall be tackled as we will recruit as many staff as we can and enter into partnerships with relevant agencies for regular drug supply to the health centres.
As part of the vision of the APGA led government to create jobs for the youths, this government shall engage in training, and equipping youths in entrepreneurship development. Skill acquisition centres shall be opened with provisions for soft loans to enable those that pass through the centres access funds to start their own businesses.
Small and medium scale business enterprises shall be encouraged as the issue of double taxation will be checked. The LGA under my watch will record a significant decrease in unemployment rate as we shall be aggressive in this regard. Infrastructural development shall also be supported in line with the finances available to us.
We are aware that majority, if not all the communities in this LGA have been without power supply since the unfortunate cut off by EEDC for some time now. This issue is of paramount importance to this government and we shall expedite action to ensure power is restored to the various towns in the shortest time possible, as the implications of this for the economy of the LGA cannot be overemphasized. More so, we are aware that the erosion sites in the various communities are becoming increasingly dangerous and life threatening. We will swing into action immediately to repair areas that have become extremely bad while working to pro actively forestall further threats in identified erosion prone areas.
As a Transition Committee, our mandate is simple but challenging. I therefore urge everyone directly or indirectly associated with this task, to roll up their sleeves and get down to work, as it would amount to an act of sabotage to stand hands akimbo when we have a Governor that is "willingly working". Therefore, Nnewi South must not only support this grassroot initiative of the Governor, but work to appropriate its numerous benefits to our collective advantage as a people.
I wish to state clearly, that this government, like our State government, will be a listening government. If there are areas of need that must be satisfied to better the lots of our people, I will be very glad to have it brought to our notice. We shall avail our people a functional platform for regular interface. As I speak, we have concluded plans for a Facebook interactive forum for ndi Nnewi South at home and in Diaspora called "Nnewi South Interactive Forum". We believe this will greatly improve the feedback mechanism we require to serve you better.
Finally, it is our desire to affect lives, and in this journey to change the narratives of good governance in our LGA, I want to remind us that our guiding principle shall be "onye agha na nwanne ya". Together we shall realize the Nnewi South of our dreams.
Thank you, and God bless us all.
Yours in Service,
Engr. Felix Odimegwu
(Omus Kaakakaa)
TC. Chairman
Nnewi South LGA.
