Manchester United want to re-sign player 10 times more than he cost when he left Old Trafford

Manchester United have shown an interest in re-signing Michael Keane two years after selling the central defender to Burnley for £2.5million.

Everton are leading the pursuit for Keane with Liverpool and Chelsea also monitoring the situation but United have now placed their former academy graduate on a list of summer targets.

Jose Mourinho has suffered the double blow of losing Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to 'long-term' injuries and wants to bolster his defence in any case.

Should Manchester United end up paying a considerable sum for Michael Keane, it would be the second time in the space of a year that letting go of a graduate has been a costly mistake.

Paul Pogba was allowed to join Juventus on a free transfer in 2012, only to shell out a world-record £89million to re-sign him last summer.

Keane has emerged as a genuine possibility after accomplished displays for England, showing adaptability that would appeal to the United manager.

Burnley are poised to hold out for around £25million once the season finishes but United would in effect get a discount as the club inserted a 25 per cent sell-on clause when agreeing to let Keane go in January 2015.
