Whenever you speak, they invite you for questioning, I would speak and I would personally pass it across to them, and let them to dare!
It is alleged that it costs tax payers about a whopping sum of N290million in the lowest to maintain each member of the National Assembly annually. This is taking place in a nation where nearly nothing works and over 75% of the population earns less than USD1 daily.
A working day earning of a Nigerian senator is more than a year income of a Nigerian Medical Doctor. It is more than the salary of 39 Army Generals or 46 University Professors or 73 Commissioners of Police or incredibly, more than twice the pay of the President of the most powerful nation on earth, the United States of America or nine times the salary of their colleagues there, the US congressmen.
The executive isn't anyway better. The President Muhammad Buhari-led Federal Government which continues to pride with a seemingly clean bill of record isn't even sure of what stand they are taking, their insincerity and unseriousness towards fighting corruption is glaring, where they are beclouded and overtaken by litanies of corrupt-ridden persons, even amongst their own. The embattled EFCC Boss, Mr. Magu is definitely a perfect example.
Nigeria's budget for 2017 was exactly N7.3trillion naira. I wouldn't bore you with a breakdown of all, or where it was aimed to be channeled towards, but let's just choose one aspect and dissect it properly, my choice is the State House!
The whooping sum of N42.9 billion naira was set aside for the State House, the Aso Rock villa where the President lives and works from.
In the N42.9billion naira, here is the breakdown:
* N123million catering equipment.
Recall that last year, N94million was set aside for same purpose.
* Presidents kitchen equipment gets N100million naira despite the N325million that was spent last year for thesame purpose.
* Welfare N209million naira.
* Honorarium and Sitting Allowance N556million.
Those alone amount to about N765,000,000. That's about USD1,545,454 dollars.
Also, there were:
5 BMW cars and 5 Toyota Land Cruiser amounting to N197,000,000. That's almost USD397,979 dollars. Computers and accessories alone cost more than N200million naira.
The most laughable and annoying of the entire list was, State House rent put at N77.5million naira. Someone should wake me up; we are in Nigeria and Nigerians are paying for their Presidential palace. Who the heck is the landlord or owner of the State House? Last year, it was N27million naira, how did it even rise to a triple the price from last year?
Another N5.6billion naira was also set aside for Aso Rock repairs. I just can't understand this. We pay rent, yet also renovate thesame house. And by the way, this amount set aside for repairs only should be enough to build a world class city. What is even the actual worth of building a new Presidential palace?
A whooping sum of N132.47m was set aside for sewage disposal. Another N52.83million for thesame purpose in the State House and additional N10million amounting to almost USD150,000 for the Lagos office. This is where in 2016, it cost N6.1 million naira and in 2017 raised to N52.8million naira. I dare ask, are they actually disposing the sewage for the entire homes in the FCT plus nearby Niger State?
Now, this will shock you more, N40million naira was budgeted for wildlife in the Presidential Villa for 2017. Humans, fellow Nigerians are jobless, helpless and dying of hunger and animals are fed with onwards of N40million naira. Why must there be a classified zoo in the Aso Rock?
President's international travels and transport were kept at N739.487million naira and that of the Vice President at N218.296million naira. The State House Headquaters N97.208millliom naira.
Oh less I forget, in the budget of 2017, only for fighting corruption, the whooping sum of N31billion naira has been mapped out for it. This is enough to reduce drastically, the rate of unemployment. There are litanies of Nigerians who are very productive and of employable age, all they need is assess to soft lone and they would become resoundingly successful, yet monies that can cater for that purpose is mapped out to fighting corruption. Why fight corruption with billions that can get the nation out of poverty line. Are we even thinking?
With all sincerity, was there any serious thing noted from all those frivolities and unnecessary excesses? Your guess is as good as mine.
In the State level, thesame rubbish takes effect. The security vote of Nigerian Governors will break your heart. It will make you weep for Nigeria. On the least, they take home in excess of about N500million naira monthly. It is important to note that they are not liable to account for how the money is spent. They may not be audited for same too, so most of them simply take everything home. The nation's security outfits, the military, the police et al are paid by the Federal Government for security purposes.
If this security vote is scrapped off entirely, politics might begin to seem less juicy and many may drop their interest for same, but as far as that incredible amount and even more is tagged for no meaningful reason, under the lootry channel called security vote, criminals must continue to strive nonstop to make it to executive positions and join in the already laid foundation of shameless looting standard.
Sadly, the sickening, saddening and very terrible Nigerian minimum wage of N18,000, a lot less than USD20, the executives owe those without qualms and even a few who manage to pay, raise their shoulders so high, even mount billboards or use other mass media mediums to advertise and pride in paying as little as the peanut they can't even offer their "girlfriends" after a round of sex or which can't pay for a buffet for them in a good restaurant or buy a bottle of champagne, Shame!
In the Legislative arm, there is this money-bazaar that they call constituency project allowances where they are dolled out millions of naira for that purpose. A tour of the various constituencies of these guys in the various Legislative arms, our Senators and Federal House Members alike can force someone to weep for this nation. These legislators care less about what the populace think, feel, say or do. They unapologetically mismanage or simply siphon those monies.
Well, this is obviously because same wasteful style takes place within the executive arm. It is therefore a general challenge. So, while the "legislooters" are stealing without qualms, our "executhieves" are doing even worse, brazenly looting theirs too. These thievery from our common till, the tax payers money without qualms is very saddening.
It is about time Nigerians ditch aside their nonsensical differences and unagreeing mindset and rise to stop the continual wastage of scarce resources by saying No to looting of Nigeria under the pretense of the power of democracy.
In the nearly three years now, Nigeria has been kept on a dramatic state, it has been from one laughable act to a cheap blackmail unto hike of devastation, through questionable and negatively informed Government policies and to monumental failure in many fronts. Nothing seems to be working.
Sadly, while the political class swim in excesses, the populace remain stagnated in hunger, malnutrition, and are pauperized. The privileged few in positions of power and authority making up less than 7% of us all continue to suckle this nation dry without pity and we watch without acting. One can go on and on.
Senator James Manager from Delta State has been a member of the Nigerian senate since year 2003 till date, making it 14 solid years in that senate and there are more like him. He said on National TV recently that he doesn't even know when he is leaving the Senate. Does it mean that there is no other capable, smart and vocal person from his constituency in Delta State?
And young people believe they are the leaders of tomorrow, yet they are been used as tools of political distractions and many act imbecilic while online. They keep believing arrant nonsense, refusing to hold leaders liable and accountable. Many aren't even willing to rise and take their destiny by their own hands. I refuse to accept the excuse that joblessness and hunger remains the cause, they may be a major contributing factor, but it shouldn't make us forgo our visions, missions and ambitions.
The rot and abysmal show of shame, rascality and nonchallancy in the Senate including the entire Nigerian political class has proven beyond human comprehension that they are a chunk of wicked fellows. Our politicians are callous, selfish, shameless and they pride in corruption. These guys are a bunch of waste and have remained a somewhat unnecessary burden on the Nigerian nation. This careless feasting on our communal wealth carelessly can't continue.
On our Legislators, many Nigerians have suggested part time legislative assembly as it is practiced in some parts of the world, but they wouldn't buy into that. These guys do absolutely less or no job at all, yet are consistently paid huge allowances for doing near absolutely nothing.
The former CBN Boss and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi recently opened our eyes more to the realities of what Nigeria can achieve if we minimize the rate of wasteful spending on these guys, hear him:
"A Senator receives N36,000,000 (thirty-six million Naira) monthly. If this is divided into two = N18,000,000 million (Eighteen million Naira)"
He went ahead, "the second half which is N18,000,000 (eighteen million Naira) can be used to employ 200 Nigerians, each earning a salary of N90,000 (ninety thousand Naira) monthly. When you multiply 200 people with the number of Senators (109), this will give 21,800 Nigerians gainful employment. In short, 200 Nigerians will be able to live a comfortable life on half a Senator’s monthly salary".
He continued, "A member of the House of Representatives receives a salary of N25,000,000 (tenty-five million Naira) monthly. If this salary is divided in two = N12,500,000 (twelve million and five hundred thousand Naira)".
"The other half, which is the sum of N12,500,000 (twelve million and five hundred thousand Naira) will be enough to employ 135 Nigerians with a monthly salary of N92.500 (ninety-two thousand and five hundred Naira) each. Nigeria has 360 Members of the House of Representatives, half of their salaries can employ 48,600 Nigerians who can live comfortable lives".
In conclusion he wrote, "So, Baba Buhari’s Administration can employ 70,400 Nigerians with monthly salaries ranging from N90,000 to N92.500 accordingly. This is just by dividing the salaries of Senators and Members of the House of Representatives. Half their present salaries is more than enough for them in a country where majority of Nigerians live on less than a dollar a day. (Now think of all the other over bloated salaries and allowances of Ministers and others)".
Well, the Nigerian legislators will never accept this sane proposal. They may be quick to point at the executives to first cut theirs too, another proposal that we well know the executives been as callous as they are, would also not agree to. It would therefore take only we Nigerians to pressurize these fellows and make them succumb to the wish of the electorate and populace.
Someone once engaged me that leadership isn't easy, which I agreed yet made it very clear that before one wants to get elected to lead, he should have properly equipped himself or herself in many fronts and very ready to face headon even unforeseen contingencies when they come calling, the current Nigerian Government is not only incapacitated, they are stupendously lacking in this form.
If I had the Presidency to my pocket, since I am from the SouthEast, I need the North, there are a few persons who still hold dear, their integrity, it matters a lot, the first choice is the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who obviously wouldn't leave his throne to come contest for Vice-Presidency.
Another option is to either ask him to get someone who has his nearly every quality and whosoever that is, it becomes a fantastic pair, or else, the former EFCC Boss, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu is amongst our finest in character, acts and doing. With a team-up like that, even failure itself would be afraid of getting anywhere close.
A serious-minded fellow won't even work off him or herself to set Nigeria on the right path and pedestal, simply provide the most basic integrals of steady power supply and trustworthy security system and Nigeria would in so less a time be launched to becoming the pride of Africa and a truly great nation.
It takes only decent, disciplined and integrity-personified fellows for this nation to metamorphose out of this joke of a nation that we are currently in, unto glory. It begins with our political class, mainly our Legislative assembly members, our executives and yes, you as a citizen also have a big role to play, get your voters card ready and refuse to be used as a tool both offline or online.
It's possible, Believe!
