Footballer dies just one day after leading his team to victory

Derry City captain Ryan McBride has tragically lost his life at the age of 27.

Just 24 hours earlier McBride had inspired his side to the emphatic 4-0 victory over Drogheda United in their League of Ireland clash.

But the defender was later found dead in his bedroom on Sunday afternoon although the cause of death is currently unknown.

The news has shocked both the club and local community as a large crowd of supporters gathered outside McBride’s home to pay their respects.

A Twitter account dedicated to Derry City FC wrote: “Just got delivered some absolutely devastating news, Derry City captain Ryan McBride has sadley passed away.

“Captain. Leader. Legend and absolute gentleman.”

Ireland winger James McClean will leave the team’s training base this week to attend the funeral.

And his wife, Erin McClean, tweeted a picture along with the caption: “No words. Devastating.”
