Owerri Prison Runs Out of Drugs for Inmates — Imo State Comptroller of Prisons Says

The Comptroller of Prisons in Imo State, Dr. Aloy Uchenna, said the health condition of the inmates in Owerri prison has weighed him down, just as he called on the Imo State government and philanthropists in the state to come to his assistance.

He said this in Owerri prison while fielding questions from newsmen.

According to the comptroller, ”we are facing a very big challenge in this prison just to take care of the health needs of the inmates. We do not have enough drugs to give to these inmates. We have doctors and nurses but we do not have enough drugs to take care of the inmates.”

The comptroller said the inmates felt they were abandoned whenever their health challenges were not attended to.

He further lamented that the Owerri prison, which has the capacity to contain 548 inmates, now has over 2,300 inmates and are still multiplying.

“It is only God that is helping us in Imo state. You see infrastructure is a major problem. The   mobility to take prisoners to court is also a problem; we do not have enough black maria to take them to court. So, you can imagine the extent we can go when we have more than 200 inmates to take to court the same day.”

“I am also pleading that people of Imo state should help us so that, the prison officers can have good offices to stay, you can imaging that some of the offices have started licking from the ceiling and looking so dirty”, Comptroller said.
