Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State yesterday granted unconditional pardon to two inmates of the Enugu Prisons and equally commuted death sentences of five other inmates to .life imprisonment. It was the first time such act was taken by a governor in the state since 1999.
Represented by the state’s Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Mr. Miletus Eze during a visit to the prison, Governor Ugwuanyi noted that the exercise was in line with the government’s policy on “Justice for All”. Ugwuanyi said he exercised his constitutional power by granting the amnesty to some inmates of Enugu Prisons, adding that he has the discretionary power to do so. According to the attorney general, “The governor of Enugu State has performed his statutory duty by granting amnesty to some inmates of the Enugu Prisons.
