It is going to be difficult for this present government to take Nigeria out of recession, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba has said.
He said this on Monday at a 5-day sensitization workshop known as ‘Harmattan school 2016’ for workers. He noted that the first step to addressing the present economic situation in the country is for government at all levels to be prompt in the payment of workers’ salaries and other entitlements.
“When you are talking about recession, you must put into consideration the people that created the wealth especially the working class, though, they are not part of the problem but they are suppose to be the solution providers,” he said.
According to him, the approach from states government to all employers of labor shows that workers and pensioners are seen as liabilities.
“Their first point of approach was to stop workers pay and refuse to pay salaries and gratuity, which cannot take us out of recession. Recession means that we need the economy to keep moving, we need people to have the purchasing power to be able to purchase and keep the economy moving. If you deny workers their pay and pensioners their pension and gratuity, you will not have the disposable income to kick start the economy,”
“These are simple parameters of addressing the challenges of the economy. Workers should be given the purchasing power so that manufacturers too can be encouraged to produce,” he stressed.
He therefore charged the workers to be committed to their duties assuring that NLC is committed to their welfare and protection of their rights.
