The speaker of the State House of Assembly, Barrister Rita Maduagwu has described the legislature as the pillar of democracy.
Speaking during a seminar organized for legislators in Accra, Ghana, Barrister Maduagwu maintained that the legislature being the first arm of government has lived up to expectation in enthroning participatory democracy in different countries.
The speaker commended the state lawmakers for distinguishing themselves among their counterparts in Africa by contributing meaningfully towards strengthening democratic order as well as effective representation of their various constituencies.
She praised them for their sound mastery of the legislative process evident in their contributions during the seminar adding that the state legislature was adjudged one of the best in Africa.
Meanwhile, Barrister Maduagwu who is the Chairman South-East Conference of Speakers of Houses of Assembly in Nigeria has assured that Igbo lawmakers would continue to enact laws that would unite Ndigbo and enforce total development of the area.
She gave the assurance in Owerri Imo State, during a grand reception organized by the Conference of Speakers in Nigeria in honour of the Imo State speaker, Chief Acho Ihim who was elected the president of the common wealth parliament Association, Africa.
