Liverpool Fans Can Boo Me All They Want — Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says he does not fear personal abuse from Liverpool fans ahead of Manchester United’s visit to Anfield on Monday night.

Mourinho has a long history with Liverpool fans dating back to when he first arrived in England with Chelsea in 2004.
In 2014 when Chelsea won at Anfield, Mourinho beat his chest in front of the away fans

Mourinho famously put his finger to his lips in front of the Liverpool fans after Chelsea came from behind to win the League Cup in 2005 in Cardiff.

And with Liverpool leading the title race in 2014, Chelsea went to Anfield and won thanks largely to a slip from skipper Steven Gerrard allowing Demba Ba to go through and score and derail their title challenge.

After the game, Mourinho marched across the pitch beating his chest in front of the Chelsea fans.

But Mourinho said: ‘It doesn’t make a difference. I go there to play my game to do my work to enjoy my work which normally I do.

‘I think the fans should go also to enjoy and to support their team. To be negative and create a bad atmosphere but in the limits of safety and respect. I think that is going to happen.’

Mourinho admitted that he understands the intense rivalry between the two clubs as he prepares to take on Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League for the second time.

‘I’ve been in England for long time,’ he added. ‘Obviously I’ve never played this match but I’ve played many times against Liverpool and Manchester United.

‘I understand the dimension of the clubs and now I understand the dimension better of two big historical rivals. But the season for me is not about the game at Anfield and the Old Trafford match in January, the season is about many matches, many points to win and lose.

‘I’m looking forward to it. I always like to play at Anfield. I won many times there, I also lost. I won big matches, I lost big matches. So I cannot say that I like to go there because I was always successful because it’s not true. But I like the atmosphere and the characteristics of these matches.

‘Being Man United manager obviously means something more because we cannot compare the historical rivalry between my former clubs and United and Liverpool.’

And the United boss said it would be ‘sad’ if Manchester United’s trip to was overshadowed by sick chants from supporters.

The toxic rivalry between the two clubs has resulted in fans taunting each other over the Munich and Hillsborough tragedies in the past, but Mourinho backed a joint statement calling for mutual respect.

‘Of course,’ he said. ‘In football we have some football tragedies, if you can say that, which is a big match that you lose, a mistake that players make, this kind of thing. You can make fun in positive way.
