Aggrieved youths have set ablaze a police station at Awajir in the Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State over the killing of a commercial motorcyclist by the police.
Sources said that the killing of the motorcyclist identified as Gabriel Saak triggered a crisis as angry youths went on the rampage, destroying several property in the community.
The youths burnt the Awajir Police Station even as they also burnt the personal car of an unnamed police officer found in the station.
Our correspondent learnt that trouble started when a police patrol team tried to stop some youths from collecting illegal toll in the area.
A stray bullet allegedly fired by one of the policemen at the scene of the disagreement killed Saak, who was on his motorcycle.
“The young man was not part of those that had issues with the police. He was just riding along when the gunshot was fired and he was killed instantly,” an eyewitness said.
Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Command, Moses Yamu, who confirmed the report, said that the trigger of a police riffle was pulled by one of the youths who engaged the police in a scuffle.
