Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), says he cannot contest the presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association because of the huge amount of money that goes into the campaign. He added that in the 2014 race for the leadership of the NBA, four contestants spent a combined N1.2bn.

Falana added that one particular candidate spent N700m.

The human rights lawyer said this at a symposium organised by members of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers in Lagos on Friday.

While responding to a question by the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), on why Falana had failed to contest the presidency of the NBA, Falana said, “The four contestants spent a combined N1.2bn. One of the candidates for the NBA Presidency spent N700m; I don’t have that kind of money to contest for professional association office.”

“Why would I suspend my practice for two years and spend a large amount of money to serve my colleagues?” he asked.
