Girl hanged herself for not getting promotion at work

Emma Alsopp, 22, went off on a break and was found in a toilet cubicle by staff in November.

Dad Christopher told the hearing she enjoyed her job as a non-emergency 111 handler but was annoyed about not getting a promotion. The Sun reports

He added: “She started to look for another job.”

Emma worked at a non-emergency call centre in Devon and had no history of depression or any serious health problems.

A statement was read out by Emma's line manager who described her as a "quiet and friendly" and "helpful".

In another statement read out in court, her father described hearing Emma had died: "We were woken at a 5am in the morning by the telephone.

"It was such a complete shock and everything has been a bit blurry after that.

"Although Emma had enjoyed her work in the call room and had got on with her colleagues, she had started to look for another job.

"She had applied for promotion three or four times and was passed over for other people with less experience. I think this caused her some frustration."

Recording a narrative verdict at Devon County Hall, coroner Elizabeth Earland said it was clear Emma hanged herself.

She said: ''I'm quite satisfied that she did indeed hang herself.

"But I'm not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that she did intend the consequences of what she did.

"My reasoning for that is she did it during a work break when she was expected to return.

"I don't know whether or not she hoped someone would find her on time, I have no evidence either way - and for that I have a reasonable doubt that she did intend to kill herself by what she did.

"There is no criticism of the other personnel in the building for not finding her soon.”
