INEC to collate, transmit election results electronically henceforth

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will electronically collate and transmit results during the 2019 general election.

The election body says it has solicited the collaboration of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecommunications operators for deployment of electronic devices during the exercise.

Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said this during a visit to Umar Dambatta, NCC executive vice-chairman, in Abuja.

According to Yakubu, the electoral body will adopt the system during the Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections later in the year.

He said the system had been tested is some bye-elections and will be fully implemented in 2019.

Yakubu said while the commission has the software and hardware for transmission, it will rely on telecommunications operators for the transmission of figures and scanned images of result sheets.

We'll, this is a good move but relying on telecommunications operators for the main material? We'll see how it plays out.
