[PHOTONEWS] The 2017 Ukpor Day Celebration

It was a gathering of brothers, friends and well-wishers from all over the world on December 29th for the annual Ukpor Day Celebration at Central school field Ukpor center.

Ukpor is a hilly town in Nnewi South LGA of Anambra state sharing same border with Ozubulu, Ebenator, Ihembosi, Utuh, Lilu, Orsumoghu, Okija and Nnewi.

The 2017 Ukpor Day Celebration was a huge success and one of the best so far.

The newly elected executive members of Ukpor Improvement Union (UIU) led by Emmanuel Chibuzor Nwachukwu (Onodugo) were inuagurated and sworn in.

It was also an avenue for the exhibition of rich Ukpor culture. Prominent sons and daughters of Ukpor who have contributed immensely towards the development of the town were equally honoured.

Below are photos from the event.

AN ADDRESS PRESENTED BY EMMA CHIBUZOR NWACHUKWU, PRESIDENT- GENERAL, UKPOR IMPROVEMENT UNION, CENTRAL BODY, ON THE OCCASION OF UKPOR DAY, 2017 AND THE INAUGURATION OF NEWLY ELECTED EXECUTIVES.

Protocols

First, all the Glory goes to the Almighty God for His grace. Then, let me thank ndiUkpor, for they have bestowed on me a very great honour by electing me the President General (PG) of the Ukpor Improvement Union (U.I.U) for three year tenure.

Your overwhelming support was humbling.

Honestly, you have asked me to carry the torch for a magnificent community like Ukpor to shine an outstanding example to other communities in the state.

My predecessor, Col. Anthony A. Ogunna (Dara Ochiagha) has made an enduring contribution to our community, particularly in strengthening the governance structures through accountability, integrity and transparency. He pursued Ukpor developmental needs with vigour and determination. He laid a foundation of trust and astute management of human and material resources as he pursued to conclusion the shared vision of reconstruction of Ukpor Town Hall.

I am privileged to be a part of that success through the Ukpor development trust fund.

While this is a signature project for his administration, we must also recognise his achievements in the other areas such as: peace and security, reactivation of the UIU youth wings to bring the young elements into community governance, his harmonious working relationship with the HRM, Chief Felix Onyimadu KSJI, JP, (Nwajiaku VI), IgweUkpor that brought the iri ji Ukpor to an elevated pedestal.

Indeed, he has left his footprints on the sands of time in Ukpor.

I will be the first to admit that this election was a celebrated contest that reshaped dominant narratives and restored real possibilities for change in our community.Sincerely, I believe that it is a victory for Ndi Ukpor as the ultimate beneficiaries of the various outcomes.

The primary theme of this administration is FORWARD-LOOKING. This implies that we have to set goals and have a vision of the future - a vision that must be collectively owned by the community. BY NDI UKPOR

We have to plan for sustainable projects that must be effected through participatory process in which all Ndi Ukpor irrespective of class, status, profession or religious leanings will forge a collective vision for the development of Ukpor; agree on common goals, and on strategies for achieving the goals and realizing the vision.

As your new leaders, we can assure you that we shall envision what we need as a community and how to get it while picking priorities that stem from the basic needs of our community. I believe that the vision of giving Ukpor a befitting modern civic centre is quite in order and in tune with the current developmental needs of our community.

Regrettably, the vision of the initiators of Nkwo-oha daily market has yet to be fulfiled. All the investments that have gone into that project have been trapped and such huge developmental project has lain fallow for over two decades. This will engage our attentions from the get go.

I am also aware that the dispute between the community and EEDC has been resolved, but the benefit of that resolution has not been fully enjoyed by our community due to some infrastructural challenges, however, we will continue from where our predecessors stopped to ensure that Ukpor enjoy power supply to the fullest.

We shall approach these three priority projects within the concept of consensus orientation, that is, by following a process that will establish mutual understanding among diverse stakeholders in Ukpor in a way that they will enjoy the full support and commitment of our people. This is because decisions and policies that have the support (or at least the understanding) of the majority are more likely to be effective, realised and sustained.

Furthermore, we must continue to key into the visionary leadership of the alert Governor, His, Excellency, Dr. Willie - the Executive Governor of Anambra to benefit more from state government's community development initiatives.

Before I conclude, let me state that from talking to some select members of our community, from meeting them, from hearing their concerns over the past few days after my election, I noted that they may applaud the direction in which we wish to go, but they want us to do it as fast and as profoundly as we possibly can and that again is an obligation that we must discharge.

More so, I have come to realise that one challenge that my generation is passionate about is the future of Ukpor and the legacies they will leave behind for the next generation. During my interactions, they cite the contributions and enduring legacies of Chief Mbazuluike Amechi (Dara Akunwafor), Chief P.N Emerah (Okosisi) Iyiegbu naEsotu, Chief J. O Obi (Alakoso 1 of Lagos), Sir S.O Nwosu (Dara Okenwa) and others too numerous to mention here. I am confident that from their reactions and responses that they are prepared to answer the challenges of our community and very eager to cast their names on the historic golden plates of Ukpor.

Finally, I must state that I am personally concerned and as well very excited about the future of Ukpor. I am also humbled about my new roles and obligations as your President General. I hereby assure you that I and my team shall ensure that we remain focused on our goals and committed in the pursuit.

Primarily, in the words of John Quincy Jones; "OUR ACTIONS MUST INSPIRE OTHERS TO DREAM MORE, LEARN MORE, DO MORE AND BECOME MORE FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF UKPOR

Thus, it is my firm belief that together, with the support and encouragement of all of you and the inspiration and direction of our current needs, we will begin a journey; we will dream more and do more MAKA ODIMMA UKPOR

Ukpor Ekenezuom unu!!!

Emma Chibuzor Nwachukwu,

(Onodugo),

President–General, U.I.U,

29th December, 2017.
