Anambra Guber: More Crises For PDP As Aggrieved Members Endorse Obiano

The crises rocking the PDP took a new turn on Tuesday, as some aggrieved members of the party, led by the erstwhile State chairman of the party, Prince Ken Emeakayi, at an expansive meeting held at the Women Development Centre, Awka, endorsed incumbent Governor Willie Obiano and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, for a second term.

This endorsement is coming barely 23 days ahead of the Governorship election in the state billed for November 18, 2017.

The endorsement of Governor Obiano for a second term by the aggrieved PDP members, came as the five days ultimatum given to the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led National Leadership of the party, to change the governorship candidate of the party in the state, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, had elapsed since October 21.

Recall that the aggrieved PDP members led by Emeakayi, had on October 16, 2017, at a rally at the Ekwueme Square in Awka, same time the PDP flag-off campaign was taking place in Onitsha, had given five days ultimatum to the national leadership of the party to change Obaze as the party's flag-bearer.

The rally had mainstream PDP grassroots leaders from across the 326 electoral wards in the 21 local governments of the state, who control the major structures of the party, in addition to the party’s polling center agents across the state.

Emeakayi had said at the rally that the PDP leadership cannot afford to ignore the strength of the numerous original members of the party in Anambra State, who had remained loyal to the party until what he called the recent hijack of the party.

Prince Emeakayi told the gathering that “Obaze is not a registered member of the PDP and cannot be the candidate of the party. Obaze and Obi are not of the PDP but APGA and as such cannot represent the PDP.

"Henry Oseloka Obaze is not a bonafide member of the PDP. He is not a registered member of the PDP. I am the PDP chairman in Anambra state and I have checked the register of all our members and his name is not there.

"We are the original members of the PDP and we cannot allow total outsiders to hijack our great party. We therefore give our national leadership five days ultimatum to do what is right.

"We give them five days to withdraw the name of Henry Oseloka Obaze as a candidate of our party and replace him with any of the other contestants who are all bonafide members of the PDP.

"If they fail to do so in the next five days, we the members of the PDP will take the bold step. If they refuse to do what is right in the next five days, we will move ahead enmasse to lend our full support to a candidate of any other party of our choice.”

Irked by the failure of the national leadership of the party to heed to its five days ultimatum to change Obaze as the PDP's governorship candidate, the aggrieved PDP members led by Prince Emeakayi said they have adopted incumbent Governor Willie Obiano and APGA candidate for a second term.

At an expansive gathering where the adoption was made, Emeakayi while addressing the gathering said: "They (national leadership of the PDP) didn't do what we asked them to do. Therefore, today is a moment of decision. Today, we will adopt the candidate of another party as our own candidate, and we are going to work for that candidate."

However, a communique at the end of the gathering, read in part: "In consideration of prevailing circumstances, we, the original and registered members of PDP, Anambra State chapter, do hereby accept Governor Willie Obiano as the officially adopted candidate of the PDP."

Following the adoption of Governor Obiano for a second term, by the aggrieved PDP members, the gathering was thrown into a frenzy. What remains to be seen is how the PDP will crawl themselves out of this hole.

Meanwhile, members of PDP Anambra State Caretaker Committee had ealier suspended Professor A.B.C. Nwosu and Iyom Josephine Anenih as Chairman and Secretary of the committee respectively after passing a vote of no confidence on the pair for their engagement in dishonest practices and several other conducts capable of causing disaffection amongst party members.
